General Web Content
Our filtering engine allocates Categories to internet sites/addresses. This process is supported by automated and manual means and we do work with our partners and customers to constantly improve the categorization.

All web and most internet traffic is assigned one or more of these Categories. You can block or allow Categories through our Category Filters.

Our Category filters use a "blacklist" model. Under this model, if you block a Category associated with a website then it will be blocked even if that website has other allowed Categories assigned to it.

You can also block or permit specific web domains (eg www.website.com) through Site Filters. Please take note, site filters take precedence over Category filters.

Filtering Secure Internet Traffic (SSL)
Our filtering technology does interrogate and filter secure internet traffic, however, we are unable currently to re-direct users to a Block Page like we do for un-encrypted websites. We are working on a solution for this.

Until then, if a site you seek "hangs" for example you get an error like "failed to connect" or "server not responding" then most likely the address you are going to is not permitted (ie blocked by your filter settings) and is a secure site.

Google's Explicit Restrictions feature (also called Safe Search) limits the Google search results to 'kid friendly' items. Be aware, while this feature is not perfect it is designed for kids and is very strict.

You can select to apply these restrictions by selecting Disable YouTube & Google Search Restrictions on your Cyber Safety Profiles. Go to Cyber Safety > Controls > Categories.

E-Mail (PC & Web)

There are many technical communication methods used by providers of E-Mail access including TCP, POP, HTML, UDP etc.  Without boring you with the detail this means that each access method needs to be controlled in different ways.

If you wish to control access to E-Mail within a daily routine we recommend you do not let your kids use the Chrome browser because blocking E-Mail on Chrome requires much of the internet to be blocked.

Proxy's and Anonymizers

A variety of technologies exist which permit users to hide their online activity.  Where these services are hosted on a website we will typically be able to block their use.

If these services are used through installed software then most likely only blocking all internet traffic will stop them (ie Sleep Time).

Things you need to know

We and our partners do our best however content categorization is not perfect

It is estimated that there are currently around 1 billion web pages with 10-15 million being added each month. Further, technologies are constantly being introduced which can complicate filtering or for the specific purpose of avoiding filtering.

Accordingly the effort to categorize the internet is enormous and, unfortunately imperfect.

Working with our partners we do our best to provide a high-quality and accurate filtering service.  Sites will, however from time to time be miss-categorized.  We ask our customers to work with us to make the internet safe but identifying issues and feeding these back to us.

The relationship between Category & Site filtering
Be aware that Site Filter settings will take priority over Category Filters. So for example you can block the category Social Networking but permit the location http://www.social.com

The relationship between the Social Networks and Internet filtering
We manage certain social networks outside of the internet filters. This is done through the Social Networks feature. It is important to remember that blocking/unblocking the Social Category does NOT affect Social Networks settings.

Social network and app providers often employ complex internet protocols and websites to enable services. Accordingly using internet filtering to control the internet use of social networking sites and other services delivered through Apps can be unreliable.

What you should do if you see your children have access to inappropriate sites

We suggest you block the site through all child Cyber Safety Profiles in the portal or Zone Manager App.

If you believe this issue may affect others we encourage you to submit this to us for investigation.

What you should do if your children cannot access required sites

We suggest you permit the Site through Internet Filters in the portal or Zone Manager App.

If you believe this issue may affect others we encourage you to submit this to us for investigation.

Site blocking and automatic Cyber Safety Profile assignment

Website rules you set apply only to the specific Cyber Expert Profile you are modifying. If you wish to block a particular site on many or all Profiles, you need to do this one-by-one on each Profile. You should remember that we automatically move your kid's through Cyber Expert Profiles as they get older.

We cannot re-direct blocked SSL websites to Block Pages

Our filtering technology does interrogate and filter secure internet traffic, however, we are unable currently to re-direct users to a Block Page like we do for un-encrypted websites. We are working on a solution for this.

Until then, if a site you seek "hangs" for example you get an error like "failed to connect" or "server not responding" then most likely the address you are going to is not permitted (ie blocked by your filter settings) and is a secure site.
